To get started, you simply need your Hives and Bee Colonies. For hobbyists, you only need one to start out. For property tax exemption, the number of each required depends on your total acreage (6 hives for the first 5 acres, plus one additional hive per 2 acres). We offer optional hive maintenance and honey harvesting services so that your investment is hands-off if desired.
Each bee hive provides a home and storage for a colony of bees. Multiple hives can be placed right next to each other. Many folks have their hives right in their back yard - but make sure you're not allergic!
Each bee hive needs a separate colony of bees with its own queen.
During active months, it is good to inspect hives once per month to maintain health, treat disease/pests, and check honey stores. (Fall and Winter need less maintenance). If you have your own bee suit, we can make it an educational experience and teach you about hive inspection. (Additional mileage charge may apply for some locations.)
Cost per hive at same site.
Includes monthly inspection March-August, and quarterly inspection September-February. Annual package includes a discount but must be paid in advance. This option only applies to sites with multiple hives.
This is not a “need” but most bee hive owners enjoy the honey harvest and often jar honey for holiday gifts, for sale, and for consumption.
Honey from all hives placed in bulk container for hive owner. Includes cost of harvesting up to 6 hives at one site. Additional hives add $50 per hive.
Honey from all hives divided into smaller jars for sale/gifting (Pricing can vary based on jars desired)
